Energy transformation hits snag: 25 mln km of network cabling needs replaced
The global energy transition faces a major infrastructure bottleneck: electricity grids. The International Energy Agency estimates that 25 mln km of lines must be built or replaced worldwide by 2035, requiring a 30% capacity increase. Around EUR 584 bln may be needed to modernize EU grids by 2030, while 40% of existing networks are more than 40 years old.
Poland’s transmission operator plans to build 5,000 km of new 400 kV lines, add 30 substations, and modernize 110 others by 2036, at a cost of PLN 66 bln. Additional distribution upgrades could build 87,000 km and modernize 60,000 km. Delays could hinder renewable connections and increase blackout risks.
