EU freed from Russian gas becomes dependent on US supplies
The European Union has sharply reduced its dependence on Russian gas since the invasion of Ukraine, but it now relies increasingly on liquefied natural gas, especially from the United States. LNG accounts for about half of EU gas imports from non-EU countries, while U.S. deliveries rose from 14 billion cubic meters in 2019 to 84 billion last year. In 2025, the United States supplied around 58% of the EU’s LNG.
The shift has improved flexibility and reduced exposure to Russian political pressure, with Norway now the largest pipeline-gas supplier. However, Europe may have replaced one dependency with another. Its growing reliance on U.S. LNG, combined with the costly expansion of import terminals, raises questions about long-term energy security and supplier concentration.
