Global energy consumption doubling by 2060, 95% of energy will come from non-fossil fuels
Global electricity use is projected to more than double by 2060, with 95% of generation coming from non-fossil sources, compared with 44% today, according to DNV’s 2026 Energy Transition Outlook.
The report forecasts that global CO₂ emissions will fall about 44%, from 39 gigatons today to 22 gigatons in 2050. That decline would still leave the world far from net zero and could lead to 2.3°C of warming by 2100. DNV says limiting warming to 1.5°C is now practically out of reach, while staying below 2°C remains possible with stronger action.
Electricity’s share of final energy demand is expected to rise from 21% today to 33% by 2045.
