GPW launches WATS trading system
Warsaw Stock Exchange launched its new WATS trading system on October 5, replacing the licensed UTP platform. The migration was completed successfully and brokers reported no significant problems executing trades during the opening hours. Investors were still cautious, however, and turnover was notably lower than usual. By 3 p.m., total market turnover had barely exceeded PLN 1 billion, compared with an average daily level of about PLN 2.7 billion in September.
WATS is the fourth trading system used by the Warsaw exchange and the first developed in-house. GPW says order-processing time has fallen from 650 to 50 microseconds, while capacity has risen to 300 million operations per session. The system can currently process 40,000 operations per second, with a target of 100,000. The project cost PLN 170 million and also introduces new order rules and automated trading halts for investors.
