Interview: higher you rise, the less truth reaches you
Marta Stańczak, CEO of SPIE Building Solutions, says senior leaders need trusted colleagues who will challenge their assumptions and point out risks. Employees decide whether it is safe to speak openly by watching how leaders respond to bad news and disagreement. Strong teams, she argues, value thoughtful debate and prevention, not just individual “heroics” after problems occur.
Stańczak describes effective networking as genuine curiosity about people, rather than collecting contacts for personal gain. Valuable relationships make room for honest advice, practical cooperation, and asking for help. She also supports mentoring, saying leaders can learn from others’ difficult experiences and mistakes. Trust takes time and grows through regular conversations, careful listening, and a willingness to change one’s mind.
