The main challenges facing medium-sized cities in Poland include depopulation and the lack of a comprehensive development strategy, according to a report by the Polish Economic Institute (PIE). The PIE study indicates that 18% of the studied medium-sized cities in Poland are urban centers that need new strategies and ideas for development. In their case, PIE sees the need for state intervention because it is these cities that face the biggest risks associated with the effects of depopulation.
“One of the biggest threats to representatives of this group is depopulation. Although nearly two-thirds of the inhabitants of these cities are of working age, for every 100 of them there are almost 30 people of post-working age, which is the worst result among all the examined groups of cities,” said Katarzyna Dębkowska, head of PIE’s economic foresight team.
Around 40% of Poles live in small and medium-sized cities.
