Min Fin: there is no cheaper means of financing defense than SAFE program
Poland could save between PLN 36 billion and PLN 60 billion by financing defense spending jointly with other EU countries under the SAFE program, instead of borrowing independently, Finance and Economy Minister Andrzej Domański said. According to government estimates, SAFE loans would carry interest rates 70–100 basis points lower than standard state borrowing and up to 150 basis points lower than financing through the Armed Forces Support Fund.
The Sejm is currently working on legislation to enable Poland to use the EU instrument. Domański stressed that SAFE is the cheapest and most efficient source of defense financing. Debate continues over how the loan will be repaid and whether defense budget funds will be used for servicing the debt.
