“We do not accept the Finnish Presidency’s proposal regarding the EU budget, this is not a compromise,” Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki said in Brussels on Thursday. He added that the treaty [agricultural and cohesion] policies, must be secured.
At the Brussels summit, EU leaders are to discuss the EU’s multi-annual budget after 2020. Diplomatic sources note that Finland, currently holding the Presidency of the Council of the EU, has previously proposed a budget amounting to 1.055% of the EU27’s gross national income. This would mean cuts in the amount of €60 billion-€65 billion compared to the European Commission’s proposal, which also envisioned a reduced budget. This proposal is to be the starting point for discussion.
Morawiecki emphasized that it is necessary to find new sources of financing EU priorities. He mentioned, among other things, an aviation tax, a financial transaction tax, and a digital tax.
