Orlen flags $1.2 billion penalty risk
Orlen has notified prosecutors over a 25-year ethylene oxide supply contract signed in October 2021, which current management says could expose the group to penalties of up to $1.2 billion, or more than PLN 4 billion. The agreement called for deliveries beginning in stages from 2024 and 2027 and running through 2048. The Warsaw Regional Prosecutor’s Office has opened preliminary proceedings into economic damage.
The dispute centers on whether Orlen could meet product specifications from 2027 without new installations linked to the delayed Olefins III project. Business Insider Polska reports that management argues the risk was foreseeable when the contract was approved. The company is reportedly seeking a settlement to reduce exposure. Orlen told the outlet it does not comment on contract details, claims or possible penalties. The article says there is no evidence anyone received an improper financial benefit.
