Poland has significantly fewer renewable water resources per capita than the European average and is approaching water-stress levels. While there is no immediate threat of nationwide drinking water shortages, some areas are already experiencing lower groundwater levels, insufficient intake capacity, and local restrictions on water use. Poland has about 1,660 cubic meters of renewable water per person annually, compared with around 4,560 cubic meters across Europe. In 2024, the country used about 8 billion cubic meters of water, with industry accounting for roughly 68%.

The power sector is particularly dependent on water for cooling, meaning drought, low river levels, and high water temperatures can also affect energy security.
