Poles react to EU tariffs on Chinese products by buying less, but more expensive products
Polish consumers increased their average monthly spending on major shopping platforms to PLN 825 in July, up 6% from the average of the previous three months, according to whenUbuy. Despite new EU customs charges, spending on Chinese platforms remained above PLN 300 per user. Shoppers instead bought fewer, more expensive products, with the average item price on Chinese platforms rising 31% from PLN 22 to PLN 29.
Payment habits are also changing. BLIK accounted for 22% of transactions overall, while buy-now-pay-later services reached 31% on Temu. Parcel lockers gained another 3 percentage points in market share.
Returns fell to 7% of orders, although fashion remained much higher at over 21%. WhenUbuy says convenience, including payment options, delivery and easy returns, is becoming increasingly important alongside price in e-commerce competition.
