Polish Volkswagen owners file lawsuit in German courts instead of Poland

A group of 215 Polish claimants has filed a lawsuit in Germany against Volkswagen over the Dieselgate scandal, with further claims involving hundreds more being prepared. Despite Volkswagen admitting wrongdoing, Polish courts have made little progress since 2016, with delays and procedural complications stalling justice. In contrast, other countries have successfully pursued compensation. Volkswagen Group Polska was fined by Poland’s consumer watchdog in 2020, but the decision remains unenforced due to lengthy appeals.
Prosecutors have also been investigating potential criminal liability since 2019, but no charges have been filed. Meanwhile, a German court recently sentenced former VW managers. The Polish claimants hope Germany will now offer quicker, fairer redress for vehicles fitted with emissions-cheating software.
