SAFE financing boosts Polish defense industry

The EU’s SAFE defense financing mechanism is already supporting stronger results across Poland’s arms industry, according to Deputy Defense Minister Magdalena Sobkowiak-Czarnecka. Speaking at the MSPO defense fair in Kielce, she said the impact of the program can already be seen at PGZ and other Polish defense companies as procurement and investment accelerate.

SAFE provides €150 billion in EU-backed loans to participating countries for rapid defense investment, with European producers receiving priority. Poland is the program’s largest beneficiary and is expected to receive €43.7 billion in low-interest financing. The government says the mechanism should increase domestic production, exports and Poland’s position as a defense-industry partner. Officials also said Poland has moved toward a roughly 50/50 balance between equipment purchased abroad and equipment produced domestically, strengthening the local economic impact of rising military expenditure over the coming years, government officials argue.
