Think tank: reducing emissions could force more job losses
A Polish think tank has warned that the EU’s target of cutting net emissions by 90% by 2040 could accelerate job losses and push more industrial production outside Europe. The Center for Development Strategies issued its report ahead of the European Commission’s planned revision of the Emissions Trading System on July 17. It argues that stricter and more expensive rules may further weaken European industry and increase dependence on imports.
The report also criticizes EU emissions accounting for focusing on pollution generated within Europe while largely ignoring emissions linked to imported goods. According to the think tank, closing a European plant may improve EU statistics even when production simply moves abroad, potentially increasing global emissions.
