USA talking with Russia about reopening Nord Stream pipeline
Russian and U.S. representatives have reportedly discussed involving an American investor in the Nord Stream pipelines, which carried Russian gas to Germany before Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. The talks reportedly included Kirill Dmitriev, an adviser to President Vladimir Putin, and Jared Kushner, President Donald Trump’s son-in-law. The article says Kushner sees business ties as a possible part of a future peace agreement.
A deal appears unlikely in the medium term. Nord Stream is covered by U.S. and EU sanctions, and Germany’s government opposes restarting the pipelines. Germany says it has secured alternative gas supplies. Poland is monitoring the discussions and strongly opposes a return to Russian gas, which it views as a security concern. Germany’s AfD supports renewed supplies and is expected to meet with Dmitriev.
