Vacation time changing with new rules starting 1 May
Starting May 1, 2026, Poland will expand what counts toward work seniority, allowing employees to include time spent on civil contracts, running a business, or working abroad. This change can increase benefits such as paid leave, severance, and seniority bonuses.
To qualify, workers must document these periods, mainly through certificates from ZUS confirming social insurance contributions. This may create disputes, especially for irregular or overlapping work arrangements.
Employees have 24 months to submit documents and request recalculation. A longer seniority can raise annual leave from 20 to 26 days once the 10 year threshold is exceeded, along with other financial and employment benefits.
