It turns out that earning of just PLN 7,200 gross is enough to be in the 10 percent of Poles with the highest earnings. Or at least this is the result of the data from the Central Statistical Office (GUS) and the Ministry of Finance, which were prepared by economists of the Polish Economic Institute.

In recent years, wages in Poland have grown rapidly, but the so-called upper decile – i.e. the 10 percent group of Poles with the highest salaries is characterized by a particularly high growth rate. In their case, in 2016-2018, wages increased in real terms by an average of 5.5 percent, compared to the average growth rate of the average wage at the level of 3.9 percent. In 2018, monthly earnings at the level of PLN 8,239 gross constituted the barrier to entering the upper decile. This group was dominated by men (67.9 percent) and people working in the private sector (72.6 percent).

On the other hand, the tax data of the Ministry of Finance from 2017, published this year and taking into account all employees shows that the income threshold for entering the top decile of the best earners was PLN 7,222 gross, with the average monthly salary at that time PLN 4,271 gross.

In order to be in the group of 1 percent of Poles with the highest earnings, you had to receive a monthly salary of PLN 22,200 gross in 2017. To enter the top group of top 0.1 percent earners, a monthly income above PLN 96,400 was required. Moving to an even more exclusive group of 0.01 percent of the highest earners, required remuneration from PLN 335,700 or higher.
