During Thursday’s session in the Sejm, a vote was conducted regarding four legislative proposals aimed at the liberalization of abortion laws. The honorable members of parliament unanimously supported all four initiatives to be referred to committees for further deliberation. The Sejm conducted the first reading of four bills liberalizing abortion regulations. Two projects were submitted by the Left, one by the Civic Coalition, and one by the Third Way. On Friday, April 12, the vote took place to send the bills for further work in the parliamentary committees.
For further work on the Civic Coalition's bill, 222 members voted in favor, 206 against, and 16 abstained. The Third Way's bill was supported by 244 members, with 171 against and 23 abstaining. For further work on the first bill from the Left concerning the decriminalization of aiding in abortion, 223 members voted in favor, 204 against, and 15 abstained. The second bill from the Left, allowing abortion on request up to the 12th week of pregnancy, was supported by 222 members. 206 were against, and 16 abstained.
The parties that are part of the ruling coalition agree that abortion regulations should be liberalized. However, the issue is how far-reaching this liberalization should be.
