UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson would order police to enforce a strict coronavirus lockdown, with a ban on gatherings of more than two people and strict limits on exercise, as he told the British public: “You must stay at home.”
The UK death toll has crossed 335. The 2011 UK Census recorded 579,121 Polish-born residing in England, 18,023 in Wales, 55,231 in Scotland, and 19,658 in Northern Ireland. Unofficial estimates have put the number of Poles living in the UK higher, at up to one million. No Polish deaths from coronavirus have been reported so far.
In a televised statement to the nation on the evening of March 23, Johnson ratcheted up Britain’s response, warning that people would only be allowed outside to buy food or medication, exercise alone once a day or travel to work if “absolutely necessary”.
All non-essential shops would close with immediate effect, as would playgrounds and libraries, he said in the address from Downing Street.
