Gas prices in Europe highest since 2022, warehouses empty
European natural gas futures rose 3.2% to €96.88 per MWh, their highest level since 2022, amid concerns about winter supply. EU storage is about 75% full, the lowest level for this point in the year since 2009, while Germany’s reserves are just above 61%. October LNG imports are below the same period last year, raising the risk that Europe and Asia will compete for limited cargoes. Forecast colder weather could increase heating demand, and tensions around the Persian Gulf add uncertainty over global supply.
Higher gas prices are also lifting electricity costs: French power futures for next-month delivery topped €200 per MWh, their highest since January 2023.
