The Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) revealed part of the documentation from 1989-1990 – the time of the Autumn of Nations, the collapse of communist rule in the Eastern Bloc in Europe. Among them are documents about Poland.
The collection of documents published in December includes, according to the CIA portal, a ‘wide sample’ from the daily report of the US intelligence agency from February 1989 to March 1990. The disclosed notes constitute a significant portion of the short-term CIA analysis of events in Central and Eastern Europe 30 years ago.
Notes regarding Poland are titled: ‘Round Table Agreement signed’, ‘Consequences of elections’, ‘Communists and Solidarity on a collision course’, ‘A non-communist government will be announced’ or ‘The communist party is trying to save itself.’ According to the CIA, the material is an important source of information for decision-makers in the US about events and developments in Central and Eastern Europe and the consequences of the fall of communist rule in Europe and the beginning of the collapse of the Soviet Union.
