Dogs at work – how our four-Legged friends affect our wellbeing

Dogs at work – how our four-Legged friends affect our wellbeing

Allowing dogs in the workplace has proven benefits for employee well-being, productivity, and company culture. Research shows that the presence of pets reduces stress, improves mental health, and encourages healthier daily habits such as taking breaks and going outside. In Poland, 85% of pet owners say their animals positively affect their well-being, and over half prefer the company of their pet during stressful times over that of people.

Pet-friendly offices promote work-life balance, foster a more relaxed atmosphere, and strengthen social bonds between coworkers. Pets act as natural ice-breakers, help build community, and reduce the guilt many feel about leaving animals alone at home. A study by CESAR found that 90% of employees who brought dogs to work reported improved job satisfaction and performance. Furthermore, 93% of employees in pet-friendly workplaces are more positive about coming to work, and 87% of employers say these policies help bring staff back to the office.

Mars Inc. exemplifies best practices with its global “Pets Work at Work” program, which includes pet-friendly zones, infrastructure, and guidelines that prioritize respect and responsibility. This initiative reflects the company's belief that pets enhance human well-being and workplace culture.

With the 27th annual Take Your Dog to Work Day on June 20, businesses have a timely opportunity to explore the benefits of pet-friendly environments. Creating such spaces isn’t just a feel-good initiative—it’s a strategic response to modern workforce expectations and a way to enhance employee happiness, loyalty, and engagement. In today’s evolving workplace, welcoming pets reflects a broader commitment to holistic well-being and emotional support.
