This year, raspberry purchase prices are exceptionally high. Processing plants pay twice as much as last year,” Bożena Nosecka of the Institute of Agricultural and Food Economics told PAP. She explained, companies this year are particularly eager to buy raspberries, as they are in great demand on the global market.
This year’s raspberry harvest in Poland may be smaller than last year’s. This is due to the weather and large losses caused by spring frosts and later rains. Another reason is the unsuccessful harvest at our competitor in Serbia, and the lack of stocks at processors from last year. This makes companies want to obtain the commodity at high prices.
In 2020, growers harvested 116 thousand tons compared to 75.7 thousand tons a year earlier. The summer raspberry harvest is likely to be smaller, and it is not yet known what the harvest of the so-called autumn raspberries will be. However, according to Nosecka, the price of these later varieties should be lower.
Poland sold about half of its raspberry production, or 57,000 tonnes, abroad in 2020. Fresh and frozen fruit goes mainly to Germany.
