Polish power-grid operator PSE activated the capacity-market mechanism on August 6 as extremely high temperatures increased electricity demand across much of the country. Capacity providers were called upon between 5:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m., requiring participating generators to make contracted power available to the system. Companies providing demand-response services were similarly required to reduce consumption according to their agreements.

The activation coincided with severe heat warnings covering large parts of Poland, where temperatures were forecast to reach between 33 and 38 degrees Celsius. PSE stressed that the measure would not affect households or cause restrictions for ordinary consumers. The capacity market pays generators and other participants to remain prepared to supply electricity during periods of exceptional demand. PSE said the system retained sufficient reserves, although further capacity-market activations could not be ruled out while the heatwave continued.
