Overall meat consumption (including offal) is likely to fall this year by about 1 kg/inhabitant compared to last year and will amount to 79 kg/inhabitant, the Institute of Agricultural and Food Economics (IERiGŻ) forecasts.
“It is estimated that pork consumption may decline to 40.5 kg/inhabitant in 2021 from 41 kg/inhabitant in 2020. Beef consumption may remain at about 4 kg/inhabitant. Poultry consumption is likely to decrease from 31 kg in 2020 to 30.5 kg/inhabitant. As a result, the overall consumption of meat (including offal) is likely to be lower than in 2020 kg by about 1 kg/inhabitant and reach 79 kg/inhabitant,” the report “Meat Market - Status and Prospects” reads.
“In 2020, Poland’s production of the three main types of hot-weighted slaughtered livestock (excluding offal) totaled 5,220 thousand tons, including poultry meat at 2,811 thousand tons, pork meat at 1,853 thousand tons, and beef meat at 565 thousand tons. Total meat production was higher than a year earlier by 1.8%, but its structure was slightly different. Pork production was down 0.7% year over year and beef production was down 0.4%, while poultry production was up 4%. As a result, poultry production accounted for 53.8% of total meat production, pork production accounted for 35.4%, and beef production accounted for 10.8%, compared to 52.6%, 36.3%, and 11%, respectively, in 2019. There has been a successive decline in red meat production for several years. This is a process resulting from a long-term decline in the profitability of production, but not without significance are various movements towards meat substitutes,” the Institute also reported.
