mBank proposes exemption for loans to finance defense sector from bank tax

mBank CEO Cezary Kocik has proposed exempting loans for defense and dual-use technologies from Poland’s bank tax to reduce financing costs for strategic investments. He argued that the savings would support domestic factories rather than remain with banks, helping defense companies fund production, expansion, and working capital. Currently, the tax on banks’ asset growth is reflected in loan pricing, making financing more expensive. According to mBank, the exemption could lower borrowing costs by about 0.5 percentage points.

For a PLN 1 bln investment financed for one year, this would generate savings of roughly PLN 5 mln, enough to purchase around 1,000 FPV drones or expand production capacity. The bank compared the proposal with the existing tax exemption for government bonds.
