Poland christens ORP Wicher in milestone for navy
Poland has christened ORP Wicher, the first of three new-generation frigates being built under the Miecznik program for the Polish Navy. President Karol Nawrocki said the vessel will significantly strengthen Poland’s naval capabilities and described the program as an important boost for the domestic shipbuilding industry. The frigates are being built by a PGZ-led consortium in cooperation with UK defense company Babcock. Prime Minister Donald Tusk said Wicher, Burza and Huragan will become visible symbols of Poland’s strength in the Baltic. Officials also stressed the project’s cross-party continuity and high level of Polish industrial participation. After completing the ships for Poland, PGZ Shipyard plans to pursue similar naval contracts for allied countries.
