Polish Deal marks the end of shopping privacy

“The Polish Deal, forced by the Polish government, is quietly attacking the privacy of Polish women and Poles. The head of the National Revenue Administration (KAS)  will receive information about what we buy in a pharmacy, bookstore, who is our doctor or lawyer,” Hanna Gill-Piątek, chairwoman of the Polish parliamentary group 2050, warned.

It is about the Entrepreneurs' Law, amended last week in the Sejm as part of the Polish Deal. Art. 19a, which imposes on entrepreneurs the obligation to introduce the possibility of paying with a payment card. Even a small village shop, hairdresser, or bus driver will have to have a payment terminal.

The same article of the amendment states that payment terminals must cooperate with cash registers that are connected and send data to the Central Repository of Cash Registers, i.e. the Head of the KAS.

"The main risk of this solution is linking the sales document – the receipt with the payment card number or other data identifying it," Hanna Gill-Piątek said.

In her opinion, after introducing these changes, data from sales at the cash register can be transferred to the head of the National Revenue Administration. This means that information about the buyer with the use of the card will be collected at the Ministry of Finance. The card number is enough to identify the buyer, so the head of KAS would know who, for how much, where and what bought; where he was, and what he ate. This will also apply to data on purchased drugs and legal services. It can talk a lot about the buyer's worldview, because KAS will have access to, for example, the books he selects.

“Private purchases will cease to be private because the head of KAS will know about everything. It is obvious that access to this data – in a different mode – will also be available to the prosecutor, CBA, CBŚ, or ZUS. No more shopping privacy,” Hanna Gill-Piątek stressed.

“There are priceless things in life. You will pay for the others with your card, and the minister of finance will be able to know how much, for what, and when. Matrix? No, Polish Deal," the Polish MP of 2050 commented.
