VP of NBP: efforts should be made to ensure banks involved in economy

NBP Vice President Marta Kightley emphasized in parliament the need for Polish banks to play a stronger role in financing the economy, especially as the credit-to-GDP ratio remains low, slightly over 30%. While demand-side factors contribute to weak credit growth, banks must support capital-intensive investments. She noted that banks have already absorbed nearly PLN 90 billion in legal risk costs from foreign currency mortgage litigation, reducing future burdens.
However, regulatory uncertainty—such as legal challenges to złoty loans and overuse of consumer protection laws—still poses risks. Kightley called for clearer legal frameworks and more balanced regulation to support long-term banking sector stability and economic development.
