Weaker Euro Boosts European Exporters' Outlook
A weaker euro is creating a potential earnings tailwind for European exporters as companies report third quarter results. The currency has declined more than 5 percent against the dollar this year and about 2 percent over the past month. Dollar denominated revenue becomes more valuable when converted into euros, benefiting businesses with American sales. Pharmaceutical and consumer goods companies are among the potential winners. HSBC strategists estimate a 5 percent decline in European currencies could add 3.1 percentage points to regional earnings growth.
The gains will not be universal. Currency hedging can delay benefits, while companies importing dollar priced energy and raw materials face higher costs. Analysts also warn that currency weakness driven by investor concerns over European finances could raise borrowing costs and undermine share valuations. Investors will watch Stoxx Europe 600 earnings reports for evidence of these effects.
