Gdynia’s city architect announces tougher rules for developers
Gdynia has appointed architect Dr. Eng. Arch. Paulina Szewczyk as city architect in its 100th anniversary year. She will help draft the city’s general spatial plan and Development Strategy to 2035, while overseeing the quality of new investments and relations with developers. The city also plans to introduce a local architectural policy and clearer project standards.
A key challenge is balancing strong development pressure with protection of Gdynia’s modernist heritage, including its UNESCO candidacy. Szewczyk emphasizes creating a livable city focused on public spaces, greenery, pedestrian accessibility, and waterfront access, ensuring long-term urban quality over short-term visual impact.
