The Polish project Granary Island received one of the most prestigious awards at MIPIM. UBM Development, which was responsible for the construction of the Holiday Inn City Center Gdańsk hotel, made a significant contribution to this urban project implemented by Immobel. The hotel building, built in the most exposed place of the Granary Island, is characterized by unique architecture.
“We had the honor to build a unique facility in the historic part of Gdańsk on Wyspa Spichrzów. That is why we are particularly pleased with this award, which is the MIPIM Award for the Best Urban Design,” Thomas G. Winkler, president of UBM Development said.
Holiday Inn Gdańsk City Center was opened in June 2019, after only two years of construction. The 240-room hotel was sold to Union Investment Real Estate just a year and a half before its completion.
The MIPIM Awards are awarded annually at the MIPIM real estate fair in Cannes, where the awarded projects are awarded in 12 categories. Due to the event's cancellation due to the spring pandemic, the awards were presented on September 15 at the Intercontinental Paris Le Grand.
The award jury highlighted the distinctive features of the Granary Island project, such as promoting social inclusion as a contribution to economic development. Gdańsk was recognized as the "city of tomorrow", where people are again in the center of attention.
The hotel realized by UBM and its location may become an important architectural attraction on the map of Gdańsk. The project consists of three parts: a reconstructed granary and two modern seven-story buildings connected by a glass passage. This combination of modernity and history has created a unique place that has significantly enlivened this space.
