Twelve major beverage companies in Poland have applied to the Office of Competition and Consumer Protection (UOKiK) to establish a joint venture. This initiative aims to create a representative entity for managing the new deposit system required by the Packaging and Packaging Waste Management Act of June 13, 2013.
The companies involved include Coca-Cola HBC Polska, Pepsi-Cola General Bottlers Poland, Nestle Polska, Red Bull, Żywiec-Zdrój, and others. The deposit system, set to be implemented in Poland from January 1, 2025, is designed to reduce mixed municipal waste and increase recycling rates. It will cover single-use plastic bottles up to 3 liters, reusable glass bottles up to 1.5 liters, and metal cans up to 1 liter.
Retailers of all sizes will collect deposits if they sell drinks in these packages. Larger stores (over 200 m²) must accept returns of these packages, while smaller units may join voluntarily.
