Czechs and Slovaks continue to flock to Polish stores for shopping despite the increase in VAT on food in Poland to 5% as of April 1. Although the VAT increase theoretically should have led to higher prices, many products remain cheaper in Polish stores compared to those on the other side of the border.
According to Puls Biznesu, cross-border shopping has intensified over the last two years due to rising inflation, which has driven up food prices in the Czech Republic. Slovaks also frequently visit Poland for grocery shopping, and the price difference has even become a political issue in Slovakia.
The Czech newspaper Deník found significant price differences across the border: potatoes cost 16% less in Poland, eggs 17% less, Jogobella yogurt 20% less, and milk 21% less. Other products like canola oil and butter are also much cheaper in Poland.
