Two major German banks Deutsche Bank and Commerzbank decided to abandon merger discussions that started about six weeks ago.
"After thorough analysis, we have concluded that this transaction would not have created sufficient benefits to offset the additional execution risks, restructuring costs and capital requirements associated with such a large-scale integration," Deutsche Bank said in a statement.
Both banks are struggling to generate growth, however, the critics said that combining two troubled banks would just create one large bank with big problems. A deal, if successful, would have created a bank with nearly $2 trillion in assets.
