The Law and Justice government used to convince that the Vistula Spit cross-section is an investment of strategic importance, calculated for long-term benefits. However, no one seemed to expect in what time horizon the benefits in question would manifest themselves. Calculations by an expert from the University of Gdańsk indicate that the flagship investment of the Law and Justice party will begin to bring profits around... 3022.

"This investment will pay for itself in 1,000 years because the costs have increased from PLN 880 million to PLN 2 billion. If you divide this by PLN 2 million because that's what the port's annual profits are estimated at, if the turnover increases to 1 million tonnes, the outlay will pay for itself in 1,000 years. This is not a joke, I'm serious," Prof. Włodzimierz Rydzkowski of the Department of Transport Policy at the Faculty of Economics at the University of Gdańsk assessed.

The paradox is that the residents of Krynica Morska were against the construction, and now it's an attraction and people will get to Krynica by watching this crosscut. The problem is that there are no conditions suitable for exports by inland waterway and then by sea, and vice versa for imports from the sea to the inland waterway to Elbląg.

Prof. Rydzkowski reminds us that even if the waterway were ready in Poland, we still do not have such ships that could sail there, up to 3,500 tonnes of carrying capacity. 

"Such ships are on the Rhine, on the North Sea, but here there are none," he said.
