A bitcoin transaction emits as much CO2 as a household for 3 weeks

A single bitcoin transaction produces the same carbon footprint as the average household in three weeks, estimates the Dutch central bank, De Nederlandsche Bank (DNB).
The basis of the operation of cryptocurrencies such as the most famous bitcoin is blockchain technology. This is a kind of decentralized digital log where tracking and verifying transactions requires tremendous computing power. This process is associated with very high energy consumption, which increases with the popularity of digital tokens.
The impact of cryptocurrencies on the environment has become a subject of controversy over the past year. In reaction to this, among others the American electric car manufacturer Tesla has stopped accepting bitcoin as a payment method.
