EC suing Poland for failed obligations concerning smog and drinking water

Poland faces another potential record fine from the EU, following previous penalties like €500,000 daily over the Turów mine. On June 18, 2025, the European Commission filed two lawsuits against Poland at the Court of Justice of the EU (CJEU) for failing to implement key EU directives. The first concerns air pollution: citizens and environmental groups lack access to justice regarding smog control.
The second relates to water quality; Poland has not adopted stricter EU rules on drinking water, due in 2023. With legal delays, political instability, and poor coordination between government branches, Poland continues to miss EU deadlines. If unresolved, future penalties could again be deducted directly from EU funds.
