In June 2024, rail transport in Poland carried 18.9 million tons of goods, a 4.8% increase from June 2023, reported the Office of Rail Transport (UTK). The freight work also rose to over 5.1 billion ton-kilometers, up 4.2% year-on-year. The average distance per ton of cargo decreased slightly to over 270 km. Compared to May 2024, cargo volumes and transport work improved, though average transport distances shortened. For the first half of 2024, rail freight totaled nearly 110.7 million tons, down 4% from the previous year.
PKP Cargo was the largest freight operator with a 27.5% share. UTK President Ignacy Góra noted positive trends in freight metrics, particularly in intermodal transport, showing growth on the Silk Road despite challenges from the Ukraine war.
