Joanna Kurowska, a prominent Polish actress, believes the Polish film industry urgently needs reform to improve working conditions, salaries, and support systems for actors. She highlights the stark contrast between Polish and American actors’ earnings, noting that no Polish actor has ever been paid a million dollars for a film – a sum considered standard in Hollywood.
Kurowska compares this disparity to the American sitcom Friends, where actors earned $1 million per episode for a week's work. In Poland, even after months of filming, such amounts remain unattainable. She laments the lack of financial investment in Polish cinema despite the talent of actors like Janusz Gajos.
“We have phenomenal actors, but the market here is smaller, and far less money is invested in cinema. I call for systemic changes to support and adequately compensate Polish actors,” she stressed.
