Poland introducing temporary border controls with Germany and Lithuania

Starting Monday, July 7, Poland will temporarily reinstate border controls with Germany and Lithuania, Prime Minister Donald Tusk announced. The move aims to counter Germany’s ongoing practice of returning migrants to Poland, which Warsaw views as unjustified and a breach of Schengen cooperation standards. The measure may be extended if Germany maintains its own border checks beyond September. Tusk emphasized that Poland’s response will be symmetrical and pursued through diplomatic channels.
While the new controls raise concerns about travel and trade disruptions, the Prime Minister assured that measures will be minimal and not hinder the flow of people or goods. Authorities are instructed to limit interference to protect both national interests and economic continuity.
