Most rivers in Poland are in poor condition - Polish Academy of Sciences

When asked about the state of Polish rivers, hydrologist and Deputy President of the Polish Academy of Sciences Professor Paweł Rowiński admitted that when it comes to water quality, their "statistics are dramatic". Among other things, he pointed to data from the GUS report 'Environmental Protection 2021'.
Between 2014 and 2019, 4,585 water bodies were assessed as part of the diagnostic monitoring of rivers. A negligible number of surveyed water bodies reached good status - only 50 water bodies, while 4,535 water bodies were in a poor state, the report said.
The hydrologist explained that this does not mean that any of these water bodies cannot be entered without harm, as various parameters are taken to determine their status, not only chemical or physical state but also biodiversity levels.
Rowiński stressed that investments in wastewater treatment plants have contributed to positive changes over the past few years, although it does not change the fact that the condition of Polish rivers, compared to those in Western Europe and especially in Scandinavia, is still much worse.
