The EU's Emissions Trading System 2 (ETS2) will introduce carbon pricing for buildings and transportation sectors. This will lead to increased costs for homeowners and car owners, with heating costs for coal-powered homes expected to rise by 40-50%. Gas-heated homes will see a smaller increase, but transportation costs will also go up due to higher fuel prices.
The Social Climate Fund (SCF) is intended to help with these rising costs, but experts believe it may not be enough. Poland is expected to receive a significant amount of money from the SCF, but will also need to contribute its own funds. To navigate this situation, Poland should discuss modifications to ETS2 and the SCF with the EU. These modifications could include measures to prevent sudden price spikes, increasing the size of the SCF, or even delaying the implementation of the regulations. Additionally, Poland should review its national programs to eliminate support for gas heating and promote energy efficiency measures, making homes and transportation less susceptible to future price increases.
