Poland considers digital tax

Poland is exploring the implementation of a digital tax on large tech companies, with support from the Ministry of Digital Affairs. Krzysztof Gawkowski, Minister of Digital Affairs, advocates for this tax to support domestic start-ups, the digital sector, and Polish companies. Despite the Ministry of Finance’s current opposition, the idea has gained traction, with over 30 countries, including France and the UK, already implementing similar taxes. The focus is on taxing the advertising activities of major platforms like Google and Meta, rather than all digital services. Piotr Mieczkowski of the Digital Poland Foundation believes this tax could help support local media and tackle misinformation. While the U.S. has warned of potential retaliation, Poland remains committed to the initiative. The digital tax aligns with the Left’s pre-election agenda, emphasizing the country’s digital transformation.
