Thirteen provinces are dealing with agricultural drought, which has caused significant crop losses. In some regions, farmers may experience up to 20% lower yields, with the worst conditions in the Mazovian Lowland, Podlaskie Lowland, and Polesie. The increasing frequency and scale of droughts are becoming a national problem, largely driven by climate change, manifesting in rising average temperatures and altered rainfall patterns. The situation is worsened by poor water retention and Poland's already limited water resources.
“Considering the index of per capita water resources, Poland has similar water resources to countries like the Czech Republic or Belgium, but much lower than northern countries like Norway," Dr. Jarosław Suchożebrski, a hydrologist from the Department of Hydrology at the Faculty of Geography and Regional Studies of the University of Warsaw, said.
