In the fourth quarter of 2020, Poland had almost the highest wholesale prices of electric energy with BASE band supply in Europe, according to the quarterly report of the European Commission. In Poland, the price exceeded €54 per MWh, the EU average was €43.4 per MWh.

Only Malta had a higher price in the fourth quarter of 2020 (€56.6 per MWh). For comparison, in Sweden, the price was €23, and in most domestic markets it was €40-50.

Additionally, the average BASE price for the entire year 2020 in Poland amounted to €47 per MWh and was the highest in Europe. Poland was the third-largest importer of electricity in the EU – after Italy and Finland.

In December 2020, the bill paid by households in Poland was below the EU average. Europeans paid €0.20-0.25 per kWh, Poles – €0.14-0.17 per kWh, depending on consumption. In annual terms, the increase in Poland amounted to approx. 11 percent. The biggest drop in accounts (by 33 percent) was recorded in the Netherlands.

Poland was at the forefront of the EU when it comes to increasing RES capacity. The largest increase was recorded in Germany – by 6.6 GW, the Netherlands – 4.9 GW, Spain – 4 GW, and Poland – 3.3 GW.
