The Sejm has approved an amendment to the Act on non-working days, making Christmas Eve a statutory day off from work starting next year. The amendment also designates the three Sundays preceding Christmas Eve as commercial days, allowing retail businesses to operate.
The legislation passed with 403 votes in favor, 10 against, and 12 abstentions. However, earlier proposals to make Christmas Eve a day off this year were rejected.
The amendment aims to provide a day off for all employees, including retail workers, for whom Christmas Eve had previously been a working day until 2 p.m. The Civic Coalition introduced changes to allow commercial activities on the three Sundays leading up to Christmas.
