German-Polish venture capital fund Sunfish Partners has invested in Aether Biomedical from Poznań, which constructs robotic rehabilitation devices based on Biosignal-Processing. The transaction was also participated by the Indian fund Chiratae Ventures and Joyance Partners with branches in California, Europe and Asia, and its value amounted to €750.000 (over PLN 3.3 million). This is the third, after PerfOps and Molecule.one, investment of the VC fund from Berlin in Polish startups from the deep tech sector.
Aether Biomedical was founded by Dr. Faith Jiwakhan and Dhruv Agrawal. Currently, the startup is launching its first product: the "Zeus" multifunctional hand bionic prosthesis, intended for people after upper limb amputation. Data-based rehabilitation can change the lives of millions of people. Worldwide, over 10 million people need upper limb prostheses. According to company estimates, about 80 percent of them live in developing countries, where the availability of devices does not cover even a tenth of the demand for them.
"Zeus" will be one of the prostheses with the greatest grip strength on the market, as much as 150 newtons and it is 30-50 percent cheaper than most competitors. The lower price enables the use of the latest technological achievements in various fields, including 3D printing, biosignal processing and machine learning. First, the prosthesis will hit the market in Poland and India. The company wants to launch further solutions based on biosignal processing, which will also support the rehabilitation of patients with limb injuries.
“We are impressed by the work and potential of Aether Biomedical to date. Dhruv and Faith have created an extremely strong team of specialists responsible for hardware and software for business management,” Dr. Marcus Erken, a partner at Sunfish Partners, said.
