Although life expectancy will most likely increase in the future, during the last two years the average life expectancy of Poles slightly decreased. According to the data published by the Central Statistical Office (GUS), in 2018 the average life expectancy of men and women in Poland was 73.8 and 81.7, respectively. This means that there was a decrease of about 0.1 years for men and nearly 0.3 years for women compared to the statistics from 2016.
In this respect, according to GUS, Poland still compares unfavorably with other European countries. In Europe, the highest life expectancy for men is in Liechtenstein where the rate is 81.6 years. The lowest rate has been noted in Ukraine, as it amounts to only 68.3 years. As for women in Europe, females from Spain have shown the longest life expectancy (86.1 years), whereas the lowest rate has been observed in Georgia (77.8 years).
Poles, similarly to other nations, have been struggling with excess mortality in men. However, according to statistics, the scale of this phenomenon is much higher in Poland than in most European countries.
