The results of Poland's 2029 capacity market auction surprised experts, as energy storage projects outperformed gas-based projects. Despite this, the Polish Power Grid (PSE) stresses the need for gas units to stabilize the energy system during the transition to nuclear energy. PSE warns that by 2027, power deficits could occur if coal plants are retired as planned. Discussions are ongoing to adjust auction rules, possibly separating bids into gas and storage categories.
Concerns remain about the financial viability of energy storage due to high investment costs and low projected returns. The government also plans to extend support for high-emission energy sources until 2028, with new auctions scheduled in case of capacity shortfalls.
